Choosing a Web Designer

Choosing a web designer is not an easy task. This article aims to provide you some helpful tips about choosing the best website designer for your job. Since there are so many factors that go into choosing a web designer, you will want to read carefully.
First, consider your project. Before you start shopping for a web designer, assess your need. Do you need the best money can buy, or can you settle for just about any web designer? Will you need dynamic pages and data entry screens, or just a static series of pages (like an online brochure)? Those who design dynamic sites are often called web developers, web application developers, or web programmers. Does your project need a strong Search Engine Expert?
Next, look for a qualified web designer. Some website design firms are strong in design, which has to do with the layout (look and feel) of the site, while others are strong in building the website (which involves programming and often times dynamic database driven capabilities. Also consider your industry. Can the design firm create an effective website for your industry? You will also want to choose a designer who can understand the business issues related to your business.
Find a designer that uses the right technologies for your job. Most often, a web designer will provide the complete solution for your website. But if, for example, you already have web hosting, you should look for a web designer that is compatible with that hosting. An ASP or .Net developer is most comforable on Windows hosting, while a PHP developer is most comfortable on Unix based hosting. Keep in mind, this is not a solid rule, but this is often the case. Do you need eCommerce capabilities? Do you need a database driven website? You will want to choose a designer that uses a rather popular technology. Designers using obscure technologies may be hard to replace if something would ever to happen and you needed a new designer.
The price should be right. You should choose a designer that is within your price range. It is generally not wise to simply choose the least expensive web designer. You should also consider factors like the ones discussed above. Generally, you get what you pay for. If all you need is a static website for basic informational purposes, you will generally not have to spend alot of money. In contrast, if you need a data driven website with an eCommerce shopping cart, you should expect to pay much more for a qualified web developer. Since each website project is unique, you will generally not get a price before discussing your website needs with the web designer. You should look for a web designer that will provide an initial consultation. Upon hiring a web designer, be prepared to pay around 30-50% down for the designer to start work. This covers prototype costs, hosting, and other startup costs.
Finally, choose a designer that you are comfortable with. You should be comfortable talking about issues and their related solutions with the designer. Look at their portfolio, ask for a consultation, and take it from there. Good luck finding a web designer. It's the next step to building your business or organization!
